Is it cool to “seed” bb’s, blogs, Q&A sites for a website?

I’m starting work for a company that publishes a few websites relating to the crafting industry.

I’d like to see us get a little more traction in specific markets. I know joining groups or using social media when you’re just a marketing person isn’t a great idea, it’s not authentic and it’s pretty transparent if you’re not a genuine contributor.

However, if you’re actively involved in those topics, is it cool to occasionally point back to your site? What about making connections with people who are involved in the industry and having them link back for you occasionally? A good marketing tool or tacky?

How do you use social networking sites to promote a local business?

I am marketing director for a local music instruction business. I would love to harness the power of social networking sites to bring in more customers, but from what I understand, those sites are best used for when you have a business for the online community.

(Of course, I understand the HUGE companies using this form of marketing, and those looking for employment… but what about the small, brick and mortar?)

What should be included in a virtual or online “buyer’s kit” for the retail DVD market?

dissertation topic about social networks and sustainability?

I’m about to begin to write dissertation for the next 3 months, for a b2b marketing/advertising agency. The idea is about: social networks (facebook etc.) as a media to incorporate sustainability into brand identity.

Now I have to come up with some specific research question and outline as the proposal.

For example, the only thing I have in mind is:
How to make social networks work/effective for building a brand’s sustainability identity?

This will include, for example:
- case studies on different brands that have their page already in facebook etc.
- what works and whats not
- based on this come up with do’s and dont’s
- and conclusion

Something like this. But the thing is, I just found out that similar research has been done before. So please please, can anyone help me with this? Other ideas?
